SPSP 2016 Award Annoucements
Outstanding Research Award
We are pleased to announce the winners of the GSC’s SPSP 2016 Outstanding Research Award! Winners will receive a $100 honorarium, as well as the opportunity to meet with the mentor of their choice during the SPSP 2016 Convention. Awards will be presented during the convention on Friday, January 29th, at 12:45 pm.

Student Poster Award:
After a record-breaking number of applications, we are pleased to announce the finalists for the GSC’s SPSP 2016 Student Poster Award! Finalists will present their posters during Poster Session A on Thursday, January 28th, 2016, from 7:00-8:30pm.. Winners will receive $100 and runner ups will receive $50. In addition, the first place winners will also have their posters prominently displayed through the entire SPSP Annual Meeting! Additionally, this year features the inaugural Undergraduate Student Poster Award, which highlights the terrific work done by our undergraduate student members.

SPSP 2016 Convention Updates
GSC Mentoring Luncheon
Do you want to meet an expert in the field for some friendly advice and insight? The mentoring lunch offers graduate students an informal opportunity to discuss their research interests and career development with an established professional in the field. As in previous years, the mentoring lunch will be held during the lunchtime poster session on both Friday and Saturday, providing approximately students an opportunity to meet an expert to discuss a variety of topics in psychology. Space is limited, so sign up today!
GSC Speed Data-ing
The convention can be overwhelming to network and meet new people. Now there is a perfect way to do so: come to “Speed Data-ing!" Based on speed-dating, this event will afford you an opportunity to meet and chat with several small groups of your peers over the course of 45 minutes (and still make it to poster session afterwards!). This is an excellent opportunity to find future collaborators, network with people who will be your colleagues for years to come, and perfect your “elevator speech”! Refreshments will be provided. Space is limited so sign up quick!
The GSC Peer Advising Match-up Program
Are you attending this convention for the first time or looking to expand your convention experience? Are you a seasoned convention attendee looking to be fulfilled by guiding others? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then the GSC Peer Advising Match-Up program is for you!
What is better than being able to meet an established student in the field when you arrive at SPSP with no networking required? You get to skip some of those potentially awkward greetings and instead get paired with someone who can help make some of the introductions for you! Not only are you going to easily meet other (possibly prominent) people in your area of research thanks to your mentor, but you will also make an instant connection with that mentor by signing up for this program! Sign up as a mentee.
Do you thrive in a leadership role and enjoy helping others succeed? This is your chance to share the invaluable knowledge and convention experience you have acquired by guiding an early-career student. Not only will this likely MAKE their convention experience, but will give you advising experience that will help you become a better mentor to future students (and not to mention, can be added to your CV!). Apply to be a Student Science Writer at #SPSP2016
SPSP is seeking up to six psychology students to contribute as eDaily interns. Successful candidates will interview member scientists, write articles on sessions, and translate science for the daily convention e-newsletter during the 17th Annual Convention from January 28 to January 30, 2016 at the San Diego Convention Center. Students chosen will receive a $300 stipend at the conclusion of the convention, visibility with byline on Character & Context (the SPSP blog) and the #SPSP2016 Convention eDaily publication, and opportunities for future contribution to the Character & Context blog. GSC Student Social Night
We are pleased to invite all SPSP student convention-goers to the 2016 GSC Student Social Night! Take some time out of your busy conference schedule to relax and socialize with your peers at Tin Roof (401 G Street, San Diego) on Thursday night, starting at 8:30 pm. Join us for food, fun and dancing. A complementary drink will be offered to the first 500 attendees. Light hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be available.

One of the SPSP 2016 Preconferences that may be of special interest to students is hosted by the SPSP Training Committee, titled: “Navigating the New Era of Social & Personality Psychology Preconference.” This Preconference brings together some of the most well-respected names in the field to get their take on the state of the field, what changes are occurring, and how early career scholars can navigate our rapidly changing science. Joining APA Division 8: Social and Personality
SPSP student members are now eligible to join APA’s Division 8: Social and Personality. As an APA Division 8 member, individuals qualify for the APA Convention member registration rate, while being a member of SPSP by itself, does not. APA Division 8 members also qualify for reduced rates for APA journals (e.g., JPSP).
To become a Division 8 of APA member, individuals must apply via the APA website, meet APA's membership criteria, and indicate interest in becoming a member of APA Division 8, which requires an additional $2 paid directly to APA beyond regular APA dues.
